Textbooks
Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1 (replacement cost $28.00), Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 (replacement cost $30.00), as well as supplemental materials determined by the teacher.
Content
There are eighteen weeks in each semester and one unit of the text will be covered during this time. We will finish the twelve stages of Unit 1 during first semester (with a major exam about every 3 weeks), and the eight stages of Unit 2 during the second semester (with a major exam about every 2 weeks). By the end of the year students will have learned the basic syntax and morphology of the Latin language. Later courses will focus on more advanced grammar and syntax, literary theory, and history.
Procedures and Guidelines
Materials
Students will need a hardback 3-ring binder, a fine-point felt tip permanent marker (e.g. Sharpie), and at least 2 book covers. In addition students are expected to bring paper and a pen or pencil to class every day.
Make-Up Work
Absent students may make up quizzes and tests before or after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment. All tests and quizzes must be taken within three days of an excused absence. If a student is present on the day that a quiz or test is announced, he/she is expected to take it in class on the day it is given. It is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed and turn it in on time. Late work always receives a reduced grade. Homework will not be accepted late.
Recovery Policy
Recovery is an opportunity designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade. Recovery will be allowed when all work required of date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
Chattahoochee High School Addendum: Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for recovery is 70%. There will only be one (1) recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. The student must initiate the process within five (5) days of notification of a failing grade on a major assignment/test.
Plagiarism Statement
Plagiarism is the use of another's words or ideas and the presentation of them as though they are entirely one's own. Acts of plagiarism include, but are not limited to, the following actions.
using words or ideas from a published source without proper documentation;
using the work of another student (i.e. copying another student's homework, composition, or project);
using excessive editing suggestions of another student, teacher, parent, or paid editor.
Plagiarism on any project or paper at Chattahoochee High School will result in a zero for the assignment and an Honor Code violation. Unless directly stipulated by the teacher, collaboration on written work is not acceptable. Students who willingly provide other students with access to their work are in violation of the Chattahoochee High School Honor Code.
Grading Procedures
The final grade will be determined by the average of all grades recorded.
- Homework/Daily Work 15%
- Quizzes 30%
- Tests 40%
- Final Exam 15%
